When I’ve hosted virtual events for girls age 11 – 14 every time I have heard the girls say that they feel safe in the ‘room’ that was created. They have told me that they have shared things for the first time ever that no one knows. The girls enjoyed the connection to each other too. I could see the girls making friends even online.
This got me thinking what if girls age 11 – 14 could connect both online twice a month for 1 hour each time and also connect in the real world. What if there was a tween-girl book club with extra bonuses?
Creating both a safe space and connection across the country (and globe) all at the same time?
Thus the Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf was born!
A safe space for girls age 11 – 14 to talk about what is really going on in their lives, learn tools to empower themselves, cope with their mental health, learn about women in the media and so much more. All while connecting over reading a book!
One of the bonuses with this Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf is that we will send around one scarf during our time together. Each girl will have the scarf for 2 weeks. She can take photos of herself in the scarf upload them to Instagram. Then each girl will also write a continued letter to the next girl in line.
Have you heard of “Flat Stanley”? Meet Opal! She will also be traveling around with the scarf. She is the guardian of the scarf and the sisterhood. Opal can go with your daughter to events, or explore your neighbourhood. Taking photo’s along the way like the scarf and uploading them to Instagram.
We will be reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The original book, and discussing it each time we meet. This book has been turned into a movie and is in the top 100 best teen books of all time according to Chapters/Indigo. It is also on the #1 New York Times Best Seller list. The book does have some light sexual content in it.
All the fun begins on August 9 and runs until November 2.
The 2 days a month for the Zoom Sisterhood of the Traveling Scarf Connection Circles will be:
The First Tuesdays at 4:30 pm MST/6:30 pm EST (except for August when it will be the 2nd Tuesday)
The Third Saturday at 10 am MST/12 noon EST
